Rally Preparation Services is delighted to offer an extremely rare opportunity to own this stunning Porsche 924 Turbo.

Porsche originally introduced the 924 to its model line-up in dealer showrooms in 1976, Being the first ever front engine rear wheel drive car offered by the manufacturer. Having a transaxle gearbox at the rear giving a 48/52 weight distribution gave unprecedented balance and handling, easily outperforming its rivals in the market. This new project and build was a joint venture with Volkswagen, and it was a totally new approach, Porsche designed the car and VW built it but directly overseen by Porsche.

The early 924’s were heavily criticized for their lack of outright power (around 110BHP – 120BHP depending on market) so Porsche re-energized the model in 1978 by installing a KKK Turbocharger giving 170BHP which instantly gave the car that much awaited power – well deserved praise followed for the engineers after finally finding some proper speed to match its excellent handling characteristics. This was the birth of the 924 Turbo.

This car offers a particularly limited opportunity to purchase a very capable rally car that is not just striking to look at, but brilliant fun to drive and has a history that absolutely no other Porsche 924 Turbo can offer.

The build was completed over a five-year period as a no cost restriction exercise and as a replica of an original works prepared car. When finished this Porsche 924 Turbo was shown at a Porsche Concours show in Switzerland, one of the panel of judges on the day was none other than former Porsche engineer and race and rally driver Jürgen Barth. Jürgen is noted as being the most successful racing driver in Sports Car Racing. Amongst many top line events, in 1977 Jürgen won the Le Mans 24-hour race for Porsche in a 936 alongside six-time winner and F1 driver Jacky Ickx.

At the Swiss Concours show Jürgen instantly thought that this 924 Turbo was his old rally car from when he and Roland Kussmaul tackled the Monte Carlo Rally together in 1980. Roland was heavily involved in Porsche’s various motorsport programs in racing and rallying for many years before being appointed head of development for racing and special vehicles. In 1990 Roland was instructed by Porsche to develop a one-make cup car based on a 911 – in turn this led to the beginning of the Porsche Carrera Cup which went to become the Porsche Supercup, a springboard for budding formula 1 drivers.

Jürgen and Roland were asked if they might like to recreate history by taking part in the 2017 Monte Carlo Historique in this car, which they were delighted to accept. Jürgen and Roland instantly helped with the further development of the car and getting it ready for the rally by introducing the owner to two of the key people who built the original works rally car that they had competed in back in 1980 – the Porsche mechanic and the Porsche engine builder, who together finalized the build and specification of this car.

This 924 Turbo was upgraded with a stronger camshaft and works to the inlet system to produce a handsome but both manageable and reliable 225 BHP, far ahead of the period production car.

Further development to the car saw the owner having a new bespoke straight cut “dog box” gearbox designed and built that comes with the car additionally as part of the spares package.

Making further outings in 2018 and 2019 on the Monte Carlo rally the pairing of Jürgen and Roland in this 924 Turbo placed on the finish list respectfully on all three occasions.

This 924 offers not only the chance to own quite simply the best 924 Turbo rally car built but the chance drive a car with outstanding history along with the possibility of getting an entry into a rally in a Porsche that isn’t a 911 – this alone mirrors the concept behind the original concept of the 924 Turbo where Porsche were aiming to have a competitive option next to the 911 in the model lineup.

First registered September 01st 1979 the car came to the UK in 2018 when Rally Preparation Services Ltd registered it in the UK for the owner. FIVA docs and HTP papers were also successfully applied for and issued for the car across 2018.

The Monte Carlo Historique is a natural event for this car yet it has also taken part in several small events across Europe since its build. There are variants of some 924 models gathering interest for collectors, so given the build, development, and exceptional history of this car make it truly one of a kind and an extremely rare car to own, compete in or as part of a collection.

The car comes with a very extensive spares package.

Currently the car is with RPS’ sister company, the SASCo storage facility and available for inspection.
